- Date June 10, 2024
At Saint Gregory’s, we take immense pride in providing our students with an exceptional education. As with every year, at this year’s graduation, we reflected on the SGS journey of our eldest students and sent them off to the next chapter of their academic paths. It brings us great joy to witness our students consistently excel beyond our doors, with every single one of them advancing to higher education at colleges or universities. This accomplishment not only assures us of their success but also resonates with their lifelong ambitions, paving the way for fulfilling careers ahead.
The Eighth Grade Awards hold a special place in our annual graduation ceremony, marking a tradition where our faculty acknowledges the dedication and achievements of our oldest students as they transition to the next phase of their educational journey.
Below, we proudly present this year’s deserving award winners:
Most Improved Award
Austin
"He has shown desire and determination in the classroom, on the soccer field, basketball court, stage, hallways. He has set goals. He has used his planner, followed up on loose ends, He has shown discipline and commitment to his responsibilities. It was a half court shot - running around the gym - pointing to the sky - all his friends chasing him to hug him!"
John Shepard | English & Latin
Catha Sheer Britton Award for Community Service
Ayaan
"He is respected by younger students; one who wrote about him on his final exam - He wrote that: He is someone who always has my back - he listens without interrupting, he makes me feel better, and gives great advice."
John Shepard | English & Latin
The Virginia Kopp Award for Excellence in English
Eden
"She treats literature with care and thought. She reads with advanced fluency and comprehension. She ponders deeper meanings and sees connections. She interprets symbols and finds guiding themes. Words, sentences chapters and stories are precious in her hands "

Fernandez Family Award for Spanish
Julia
Jacqueline A. Mauro Award for Excellence in Fine Arts (Visual Arts)
Peter
"This student dares to try new things. They are unbothered by the unfamiliar and they demonstrate a curiosity with regard to new mediums. They are authentic in their work, consistently offering a unique perspective and that 'bit of something extra' to each of their pieces to make it truly theirs."
Chelsea Delaney | Art
Jacqueline A. Mauro Award for Excellence in Fine Arts (Musical Arts)
CJ
"Ray Charles said, 'Music is to me like breathing. I don’t get tired of breathing, so I don’t get tired of music!' I watched as the minutes of recess ticked by and still it would not be enough time spent with his beloved instrument."
Jeanine Ouderkirk | Music
Jacqueline A. Mauro Award for Excellence in Fine Arts (Musical Arts)

"This student has been musical from the very beginning. Like any composer or producer, he often worked on his creations independently and without the public pomp and circumstance. Recently, he declared that he had written about a hundred short songs a couple years ago."
Jeanine Ouderkirk | Music
Robert M. Thomas Award for Excellence in Computer Science
Tao
"I hope to one day read that their coding and programming broke barriers, or that their algorithms helped cure disease, or maybe one day in the not-so-distant future, I’ll be at a movie theater to watch how their technological innovations led to the world’s latest blockbuster Spiderman movie."
Eric Martell | Humanities
Anne Smith Maloy Award for Excellence in Catholic Studies Award

"Our recipients consistently showed how dependable, insightful, dedicated, humble, and compassionate they are not just this year, but in years past as well."

Faculty Award for Excellence in Research and Rhetoric
Eden
"Our students produced a gaggle of essays and book and film reviews, not to mention a very demanding and complex 'Final Research Project,' which is a 12 to 15-page original research paper. Based on the quality of writing, thoroughness of research, evidence of critical thinking, topic selection, and a hundred other incidentals there’s no way you will not be impressed with what they’ve achieved--achieved because of Saint Gregory’s faculty’s collaborative efforts to have your children be the best critical thinkers and effective communicators they can be."

"I know of no two students more deserving of an award about being a good teammate, listening to others, and leading others than these two candidates."
