Studying can be difficult for middle schoolers to adjust to. However, establishing these study habits will be good for the future education of these students. There are a few simple steps to creating these habits by organizing, preparing, and focusing not only in school, but at home as well. Here are the top 10 ways in which middle school students should prepare for a test.

Make Flashcards to study from

Flashcards can be a great way to remember vocabulary words, math problems, or specific concepts. If your child needs more visual stimulation, then it might be beneficial to use flashcards with bright colors or words.

Buy an agenda book (and use it)

A fun agenda book is a perfect way to organize each school day. With a lot of different classes and assignments, it can be hard for your child to stay on task and know what they need to do each day. With an agenda, you can easily plan each day and organize your assignments.

Discuss assignments with friends and family

Connecting with those around you about school can be very beneficial. Since school is such a large portion of a child’s life, it is important to be able to discuss what happens each day with friends and family. Especially if you are unsure of a specific assignment, talking to the people around you can help.

Make academics a main focus in your life

Middle school can be a challenging time for students. With many distractions including peers, school events, and athletics, it can be hard for kids of this age to focus on academics. However, it is very important to encourage your child to make school a main focus since it sets your child up for future education.

Make your own study guide

Study guides help to organize immense amounts of information from a class into a small guide. Look at chapter headings, section headings, and review sections and create your own set of words and information to merge with your class notes.

Ask for help

Start by asking the teacher for assistance with a subject or problem you are unsure about. Next, if it is a class assignment, ask one of your classmates for help. If you are continuously confused about a given subject, it may be beneficial to ask your teacher for tutor recommendations.

Don’t procrastinate

Procrastinating can be a very bad study habit to get into. Waiting until the last minute can cause you to cram late at night before the test. This will not only make you nervous and more stressed, but can cause you to lose sleep and have bleary eyes.

Select a study space

Everyone studies differently, so finding a study space that works for you is very important. Some people enjoy a nice music background, and others need a silent space to work. If you are interested in listening to music, opt for some classical music.

Dedicate specific places in your book bag for each class

For every class, grab a binder or folder to keep all your assignments organized. There should be specific places for notes, homework, handouts, and assignments so everything is easy to access throughout the day.

Stay organized throughout the year

Organization is key when getting through school. When getting ready to study, it is vital that all the information you need is right where you left it. After all, you can’t study if you don’t have all your study materials.

Studying can be difficult to grasp and it’s important to find out which study habits work best for you. The lessons taught in middle school are the building blocks for high school and beyond. Starting good study habits allows you to be successful academically in the future.
