2024-25 School Year Recap: Part II

  • Categories Community, Student Life
  • Date July 17, 2025
A collage of exciting moments that happened during the second half of the 2024-25 academic year at Spelling Bee Winners at Saint Gregory's School in Loudonville, NY

As another school year comes to a close, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the second half of the 2024–25 academic year, which brought no shortage of memorable moments at Saint Gregory’s. Whether students were performing on stage, competing in athletics, exploring new places, or celebrating school traditions, their enthusiasm and curiosity were front and center.

These past months were filled with learning, laughter, growth, creativity, and so much to be proud of. Now that summer is here, we’re taking a moment to look back at the highlights.

January 2025

Spelling Bee

Saint Gregory’s spellers showed off their skills at the 2025 Spelling Bee, competing with focus and confidence. Congratulations to Will ’27, who took first place, and Jackie ’27, the runner-up, and all the other finalists for representing the school’s commitment to academic excellence. It was a fun and challenging event for everyone involved.

FireWolves Visit

Dyson Williams and Will Johansen from the Albany FireWolves visited our school to share their stories about hard work, discipline, and their passion for lacrosse. Our students enjoyed hearing from the pros and had a blast getting autographs from the local sports stars.

DARE Graduation

Our fifth graders proudly graduated from the DARE program, marking an important step in learning about making healthy choices. With support from Officer Amanda, K-9 Officer Eddie, and the Colonie Police Department, the students wrapped up the program with confidence and pride. It’s always rewarding to see them take these lessons to heart.

Catholic Schools Week

Catholic Schools Week is a nationwide celebration that honors the values, community, and faith that Catholic schools bring to education. At SGS, our students took part in fun and meaningful activities to mark the week. Kindergarteners shared what they love most about school — from math and art to recess and their favorite teacher, Mrs. LoGuiduice. Lower School students came together to create a large American flag, showing their pride for the country. And on the final day, everyone dressed up as their favorite teachers to celebrate the staff who make learning so special.

February 2025

Trip to Siena Women’s Basketball

The girls basketball team enjoyed a special trip to Siena College to watch the Lady Saints play. It was a great chance to see college-level basketball up close and get inspired by the athletes in action.

Lunar New Year

With support from SGS families and the Chinese Community Center of the Capital Region, students celebrated Lunar New Year with joy and respect for tradition. A special highlight was Emily’s (Class of 2028) performance of traditional songs and dances from the Peking Opera, which captivated everyone.

Winter Knights Out

The first-ever Winter Knights Out was a big hit, featuring two mixed teams of SGS boys and girls basketball players showing off their skills in front of an enthusiastic crowd. Thanks to the SGS Parents’ Association for organizing the event, with special shoutouts to Siena’s dance team for an entertaining halftime show, DJ Caroline for keeping the energy high, and Sake Steakhouse and the Yang family for the delicious catering. It was a fun night that brought the whole community together.

Check out the highlights of this event in our Flickr photo gallery.

Athletics, Winter 2025

Our student-athletes gave it their all this winter, with standout moments across every team. The boys’ basketball team capped off a strong season with a CYO Championship win — an exciting finish to months of hard work and teamwork. Girls’ basketball showed steady growth and grit, improving with every game thanks to their dedication and team spirit.

This year also marked the first season of SGS volleyball, and the team made an impressive debut under the guidance of Ms. Romaniello. Meanwhile, over 30 Lower School students joined basketball camp with Coach Tay Fisher, building skills and confidence for the seasons ahead.

March 2025

Read Across America Week

To celebrate Read Across America Week, SGS went all in on the joy of reading. Lower School students kicked things off with a visit from the Cat in the Hat himself, followed by buddy reading sessions where Upper School students shared stories with their younger peers. The week wrapped up with a colorful display of creativity as students and staff dressed up as their favorite book characters — proof that the love of reading is alive and well at SGS.

Trip to Broadway to see The Outsiders

As part of their study of S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders, our 8th graders took a special trip to Broadway to see the Tony Award-winning musical adaptation of the novel. Seeing the story come to life on stage added a new dimension to their classroom discussions and made for a memorable day in New York City.

April 2025

School Musical

This spring’s school musical, Dreams of Broadway, lit up the stage in the Upper School gym with two fantastic performances by our talented student cast and crew. From singing and dancing to behind-the-scenes work, every part of the production showed off the dedication and creativity of our students. Thank you to our cast and crew, Dr. Meyer, Ms. Ouderkirk, Mrs. Greco and to all who came out to support the show!

You can find more photos from the performance on our Flickr gallery.

SGS Gala

This year’s Saint Gregory’s Gala was a joyful evening filled with laughter, connection, and school spirit. Held at the Capital District Regional Market, the event brought together families, alumni, faculty, and friends to celebrate the SGS community and to honor beloved former teachers Joan and Jake Shepard, whose legacy was felt throughout the night. Thanks to the generosity of our guests during the auctions and paddle raise, the Gala was not only a celebration but a meaningful show of support for the future of the school. Funds raised from the event will help support the renovation of our art room — an exciting project that will benefit students for years to come.

You can relive the night by browsing our Flickr gallery.

Multicultural Fair

The 3rd Annual Multicultural Fair turned the gym into a global celebration, with students sharing traditions, food, and culture from countries around the world. It was a powerful reminder of the rich diversity within our community and a proud showcase of our students’ curiosity and creativity.

See all the highlights from the event on our Flickr gallery.

May 2025

Spring Concert & Art Show

Our students truly shined at the Spring Concert and Art Show, celebrating the arts with performances and exhibits that highlighted their talents. Thanks to the dedication of Ms. Ouderkirk and Ms. Delaney, the event was a wonderful showcase of music and visual art, enjoyed by family, friends, and the whole SGS community.

Talent Show

In May, our seventh grade religious studies students held the annual talent fair as a way to raise money for a worthy Capital Region charity as well as showcase the immense talent we have among our students. From singing and dancing to violin and piano and finally to a “chicken themed” sketch comedy routine, the stars of SGS shined brightly. In doing so, Saint Gregory’s raised over $1,000 for the Please Remember Foundation here in Albany.

Upper School Field Day

Upper School Field Day was packed with energy, teamwork, and just the right dose of friendly competition. From relay races to tug-of-war, students gave it their all while cheering each other on.

Check out all the action shots on our Flickr gallery!

Washington D.C. Trip

Our 8th graders wrapped up their final year at SGS with the unforgettable tradition of their annual Washington, DC trip. They explored the nation’s capital firsthand, visiting iconic sites like the White House, the House of Representatives, and Arlington National Cemetery. This experience brought history and culture to life in a meaningful way for our students.

June 2025

Graduation

We’re so proud of Saint Gregory’s Class of 2025! This year’s graduates celebrated their achievements with a joyful ceremony filled with smiles, applause, and well-deserved recognition. As part of the tradition, our 8th graders were honored with awards that highlight academic success, school spirit, and personal growth. To see the full list of awards and learn more about these outstanding students, check out our Graduate Awards blog.

We also enjoyed a fun Q&A session where the 8th graders reflected on their time at SGS and shared their hopes for the future. It was a great way to look back and celebrate the memories they’ll carry with them. You can read more in our Interview with the Class of 2025 blog.

Relive the special day and see all the graduation photos in our Flickr album.

All Year

Gregorian Gazette

This semester, our student journalists kept the SGS community informed and entertained with two fresh editions of the Gregorian Gazette. The March issue shared winter updates and campus stories, while the May edition captured the spirit of spring with insightful reports and features. You can read both editions on our Student Newspaper page. Thank you to Mrs. Harris and Ms. Romaniello for advising the students.

Read the full winter and spring edition here.

School Garden

Saint Gregory’s Garden Club has been busy this spring and summer preparing and caring for our school garden. From planting seeds in early May through harvesting fresh lettuce and kale in July, our students have enjoyed hands-on learning about composting, identifying weeds, and what plants need to thrive. Even our youngest summer campers got involved, helping keep the garden full of life and growth. It’s a great way for students to connect with nature and watch their hard work bloom. Thank you, Mrs. Barker, for your excellent green thumb and leadership!

Summer Camp

This summer, we kicked off our first-ever Summer Knights Camp, with separate programs for younger kids and older campers. The days have been full of soccer, hula hoop games, gardening, and plenty of running around. The kids are having a blast staying active and trying new things, and we’re excited to keep the fun going throughout the season!

As we close the book on another school year, we’re grateful for all the learning, achievements, and growth that filled our halls these past few months.

To our students, families, and faculty — thank you for making this year so special. We’re already looking forward to what’s ahead in the 2025-26 academic year. Until then, enjoy the summer, and don’t forget to follow along for updates from Summer Knights Camp and more.
