Celebrating the Launch of the National Art Honor Societies at Saint Gregory’s

Private school students of Saint Gregory's School are posing in front of a LEGO dinosaur, part of the "Art of the Brick" exhibit in the Armory Studios in Schenectady

We are proud to introduce two new programs for the 2025 – 2026 school year: the National Junior Art Honor Society (NJAHS) for Grades 6–8 and the National Elementary Art Honor Society (NEAHS) for Kindergarten through Grade 5. These programs recognize students who show exceptional creativity, dedication, character, and service through the visual arts.

With the NJAHS, our middle school students will have more opportunities to grow as creative thinkers, take on leadership roles, and collaborate on art-centered projects and service initiatives. These experiences are designed to help students understand how their artistic talents can make a real impact within the school and the wider community.

Saint Gregory’s is also one of only a small number of schools nationwide selected to pilot the National Elementary Art Honor Society. This honor reflects the school’s longstanding commitment to cultivating imagination, leadership, and artistic excellence among our youngest learners. As a pilot school, SGS will help shape the NEAHS program for future student artists across the country.

Building Community Through Art

Both honor societies encourage students to explore creative expression while developing responsibility, confidence, and a deeper connection to the arts. Through hands-on projects, community engagement, and leadership opportunities, participants will gain experiences that support their artistic growth all year long.

Celebrating the Start of the Program

To mark the launch of these programs at SGS, students participated in their first offical outing on November 8th, 2025 to the Art of the Brick, Nathan Sawaya’s world-renowned LEGO exhibition at the Armory Studios in Schenectady.

The exhibit sparked excitement from start to finish. Students were captivated by the sculptures, amazed by the sheer number of LEGO pieces used in each work, and eager to identify the famous artworks that inspired many of the designs. A highlight of the visit was the LEGO play area, where students from every grade level created imaginative pieces of their own.

The day was filled with creativity, teamwork, and pure joy and served as an inspiring start to what promises to be a meaningful year for our young artists.

Open Studio Sessions

Throughout the school year, students in the National Junior Art Honor Society and National Elementary Art Honor Society have continued building community through regular Open Studio sessions led by Ms. Delaney.

In addition to meeting twice each month for official Honor Society activities, students also gather twice a week during Open Studio afternoons to create artwork, collaborate with fellow student artists, and explore new creative ideas in a supportive environment. These sessions have become an important part of the program, giving students more opportunities to express themselves creatively while strengthening their artistic skills and confidence.

We welcome anyone who wants to learn, grow and achieve at SGS. Apply to Saint Gregory’s today.
